This terrific selection of Jack pine boasts unique, sculptural forms. Leaders can grow every which way, even horizontally, and the branches twist and turn, so no two specimens are alike. The result is an informal, upright, evergreen mound with contorted branches throughout. (Note: this selection is likely the same as 'Uncle Fogy.' We cannot see a difference in the young plants, which have the same growth rate and twisting branches throughout. A 'Bush's Twister' we saw at the nursery of the late Dick Bush of Canby, OR is upright with twisted branches. Some 'Uncle Fogy' specimens we have seen are less upright. This shape difference can be attributed to grower training or propagation using a side branch as opposed to the top whorl of growth.) Very slow growing with very small bright green needles.  Grows into a 15-18" ball in ten years.
Pinus banksiana 'Manomet'
Our Price: $35.00
Pinus banksiana 'Pendula'
Our Price: $45.00
A dwarf globe with very short dark green needles. This Jack pine has an upright leader and pendulous side branches that do not twist. Its habit is broader with more pendulous branches than 'Uncle Fogy' or 'Bush's Twister,' characteristics that distinguish the slow-growing conifer from others. Some say that 'Pendula' and 'Bush's Twister' are the same, but the plants we grow as 'Pendula' are definitely different.
A dense, prostrate form of Jack pine with emerald green needles, this slow-growing seedling selection can drape down a wall or spread out in a low mass on a bank. Even after 30 years, a very old specimen only gets about 3' tall in the center and 15' wide. Numerous cones have a high percentage of viable seeds that make some interesting seedlings. Selected about 1970 by Alfred Fordham, Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts from seed collected on the Schoodic Penninsula in Massachusetts. A sculptural form - no two are alike!  Leaders can grow in any direction forming an informal upright to a mound when the leaders have chosen to grow almost horizontally.  All branches twist and turn.  Note:  likely the same as 'Bush's Twister' - we cannot see a difference in the young plants - same growth rate and twisting branches throughout.   A 'Bush's Twister'   we saw at the nursery of the late Dick Bush of Canby, OR - is upright with twisted branches.   Some 'Uncle Fogy' specimens we have seen are less upright.  This shape difference can be completely attributed to grower training or propagation using a side branch compared to using a cutting from the top whorl of growth.  Either way, it is a terrific selection!
Pinus cembra 'Blue Mound'
Our Price: $30.00
Bright emerald-green needles and enchanting exfoliating bark with beautiful plates of orange, brown, green and gray distinguish this smaller, slower-growing form of the Chinese Lacebark pine used in temple gardens. The compact, bushy, multi-stemmed selection has dense foliage in clusters of 3-needles. Great soft blue needles and a pyramidal to narrow-pyramidal form.
Pinus cembra 'Glauca'
Our Price: $25.00
Pinus cembra 'Tip Top'
Our Price: $55.00
A dense narrow conical form with blue-green-silver foliage.  We received this plant as 'Glauca' but believe it is what the industry sells as 'Glauca Compacta.'  Given the dense habit and compact form, we have changed the name to 'Glauca Compacta.' A dense conical form with silver and blue needles contrasted by green new growth.
Pinus cembra 'Twister'
Our Price: $75.00
A dense conical form with blue-green needles.  The needles at branch tips have a distinctive twist. A single leaf Mexican Pinyon pine with juvenile blue needles!  Plant has a very narrow form and is very slow growing.  Great color and incredibly unusual!  We have also seen it listed as Pinus monophylla - which is likely the more appropriate species.  The introduction was by Larry Stanley, owner of Stanley and Son's Nursery in Boring, OR who has it listed as cembroides - so we'll stick by that until further notice.
A columnar form with stiff green needles.  An incredibly narrow grower, we expect it to be only 3' wide when mature at around 20' tall. Green summer needles begin turning gold in the fall.  By winter, this plant is absolutely brilliant gold.  It was found in the Wallowa Mountains by Doug Wills of Sandy, OR during a hunting trip.  He supposedly used an axe to dig it.  This variety has proven to be difficult to propagate - yellow and some variegated conifers are typically more difficult to graft.  Some growers recommend using Pinus contorta var. latifolia understock which eliminates winter burn.  Chief Joseph (1840-1904) was the chief of the Wallow Valley Nez Perce tribe.  He became famous in 1877 for leading a three and a half month defensive war against the US Army who was attempting to forcibly remove the Natives to a reservation in Idaho.
Pinus densiflora 'Aurea'
Our Price: $35.00
Brilliant golden foliage on top of blue-green foliage with red cones.  Mesmorizing colors, but difficult to propogate. Beautiful year-round, this medium-size, broadly pyramidal pine gets even more dramatic in winter, when the light-green summer needles turn a vibrant golden yellow that continues to intensify in colder weather. A great choice for cold climates, the golden Japanese red pine makes a dramatic statement.
Bright green and yellow bands decorate the needles of this variegated Japanese red pine, and the creamy-butter coloring becomes more vibrant in summer. Vigorous and easy to grow compared to other variegated forms, this dragon eye pine tolerates diverse site conditions and does not burn in winter. Also known as 'Red OD Burke,' it develops an irregular but majestic form with orange-red exfoliating bark. Striking. This attractive dwarf Japanese red pine develops multiple leaders and a low, rounded or egg-shaped habit. Dark green evergreen needles in clusters of two give the dwarf shrub good texture.
Pinus flexilis 'Comanche'
Our Price: $35.00
The incredible, vibrant blue of this Limber pine almost defies description. The very long, powdery blue needles, most intensely colored mid-summer through winter, lend year-round appeal. And the slow growing, compact form, pyramidal when young, stretches into a narrow pyramid in ten years. For color, texture, form and versatility, this beauty makes desirable contributions in many settings. A globose to conical form with short green to gray-green needles.  Only grows about 2" a year - a Jerry Morris introduction named after the Comanche Native Americans.
The unique, sculptural character of this flexible Limber pine comes from its free-flowing branches. They might grow upright, or at an angle, or horizontal above the ground, or even as a groundcover. In addition, the dramatic conifer produces long, distinctly blue, silver-banded needles. Grown upright, its swooping branches fill a large area; grown low, the branches flow nicely beneath taller, deciduous trees. New growth is more green and lush. Likely introduced as 'Pendula,' "Glauca" was apparently added later to denote the blue foliage. Sometimes labeled 'Glauca Reflexa. A dwarf squatty globose form with greenish-blue needles that are 2" long.  A nice dwarf form of limber pine found by Jerry Morris.
Pinus koraiensis 'Anna'
Our Price: $35.00
A symmetrical conical form with bluish-silver needles contrasted by greenish-blue new growth.  Needles are larger than the species and similar to many of the Korean pines.  Was found by Peter Vanderwolf as a seedling at Vermeulen Nursery in New Jersey and introduced in 1972. A great variety introduced by the late Chub Harper, passionate conifer collector, and named after his wife.  Needles are beautifully glaucous and very blue.
Blue-green needles have yellow banding.  Possibly the best variegated form of Korean pine.  The long needles bend giving a tufted appearance.  Also known as 'Jack Korbett' and possibly 'Jack Corbett.' A fantastic variety of the extraordinary Korean pine, this upright, variegated evergreen has long, soft blue-green needles banded with yellow. The 4-5" needles have a downward turn like those of 'Jack Korbit' and produce a graceful, weeping look. Variegation is more prominent on established trees in colder climates. Also called 'Dragon Eye,' which is Latin for 'Oculis Draconis.'
Fantastic, long, silver-blue needles and an elegant, narrow, conical form make this extraordinary Korean pine highly desirable. We love the name and the plant. Introduced in the late 70's to early 80's, it is the standard in Europe. Its tight, fist-size pine cones have the look for which pine-apple was named. Plant several for a tall, dense screen or just one as a beautiful specimen. A globose form that is wider than tall.   A unique bushy form of Korean pine.  We originally listed this as 'Winton.'
Pinus kwangtungensis
Our Price: $80.00
Needles are similar in color and size to the Japanese white pine - Pinus parviflora.  Grows quickly and cones profusely. Large crisp dark green needles have yellow tips.  The color contrast is striking.  Also known as Pinus heldreichii.
A columnar form with beautiful large dark green needles.  It is not extremely narrow - it will be about 3' wide when 8' tall. An exceptional, slow-growing form of mugo pine, this low, compact, broadly globose selection provides brilliant gold winter coloring. More intense in colder climates, the splash of gold is a welcome winter sight. Growth is slow even in ideal conditions. Discovered by Erwin Carsten, Varel, Germany before 1988, it is also known as 'Carstens'.
Pinus mugo 'Corley's Mat'
Our Price: $60.00
Pinus mugo 'Fastigiata'
Our Price: $30.00
Dwarf, low form with large green needles. The stiff, upright branches of this unusual mugo pine are held so closely to the trunk that they resist damage from snow load. The columnar to narrowly conical evergreen conifer has rich green foliage and slow growth. A strong presence in a narrow shape makes 'Fastigiata' an ideal choice for smaller spaces.
Pinus mugo 'Green Candle'
Our Price: $55.00
A cluster of small needles at the branch tips resemble a crown.  Found as a seedling in 2004 by Edwin Smits in Volkel, Netherlands. A collectors marvel, we will only be offering this plant until they sell out.  Nice 1-gallon crop limited availability. A globose form with an extremely heavy spring flower show.  The male cones (pollen cones) form at the base of the new candles so densely and throughout the plant - giving its name 'Green Candle.'  The "Green" in the name refers to the cones, not the needles on the candles.  As the cones mature, they become brown, giving a very aged look.  It will mature into a broad pyramid - but not for many years.
Pinus mugo 'Hvozdany'
Our Price: $95.00
A witches broom found on Mops, miniature, growing to only 1' x 1' in 10 years. Miniature with very short needles and prominent light-brown buds.  1' x 1' in 10 years.
Pinus mugo 'Paul's Dwarf'
Our Price: $30.00
A squat globose or bun-shaped mugo with light green needles about 1.5" long.  A nice dwarf form. The open globose form is unique for a mugo.  Unlike most bun or globose mugo pines, the opening branching gives a great alpine look which makes it look so much older than it is.  That said, this is not a fast grower.
Pinus mugo 'Suncrest'
Our Price: $48.00
Pinus mugo 'Teeny'
Our Price: $55.00
Small green needles and dense branching. A compact bun to globose form with very small green needles.  Also known as 'Tiny.'
Pinus mugo 'Wood's Pillar'
Our Price: $165.00
Pinus mugo 'Yellow Point'
Our Price: $45.00
An upright globose form - "Pillar" is a bit misleading - it is not columnar, but rather globose to broadly pyramidal.  Regardless, the foliage is lush, and the branching is incredibly dense. Sometimes the name really makes the point, as is the case with this yellow-tipped mugo pine. Bright green needles have yellow points that are most prominent in winter. The coloring, most vibrant at the tips, gradually fades toward the base of the needles.
Pinus mugo 'Zundert'
Our Price: $45.00
A great new mugo with brilliant golden winter color.  Needles turn green in summer. Curved, short, bright blue needles and a narrow, upright form make this slow-growing variety of Japanese white pine a real winner. Layered secondary branches create attractive tiers of foliage, sort of like the floors of a narrow building.
Pinus parviflora 'Aoi'
Our Price: $95.00
A tight pyramid with small needles that are green and silver-blue. A graceful, small conifer with a narrow upright habit and short, up-curved, silver-green needles, this form of Japanese white pine is a great choice for small spaces. Many persistent cones at a young age add to the beauty of the showy accent plant.
Pinus parviflora 'Cleary'
Our Price: $35.00
Short green needles and wide, mountain-side open form make this variety a winner.  An introduction from John Proudfood, Scotland, UK around 2000.  Definitely in our top 1 or 2 dwarf varieties of Parviflora. This superior selection of Japanese white pine combines dazzling silver-blue foliage with a compact, narrowly pyramidal form. In spring, the new green candles are accented with a heavy production of creamy-peach color male pollen cones.
