Hinoki Cypresses - Chamaecyparis obtusa

Hinoki Cypress is native to Japan, and is a symmetrical, broadly conical tree. The sprays of graceful, flattened foliage drooping at the tips give it a soft appearance. The small, hard, seed cones are green when young, turning to an orange-brown. After 10 years, it grows to 10’H × 3-4’W, and can reach 40’H × 75’W at maturity, but there are a number of differently shaped and sized cultivars of Hinoki Cypress that fit well into a garden landscape. It grows best in full sun, but will tolerate light shade, and will grow in a variety of soil types as long as they are acidic and well-draining. Hinoki Cypress is hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8.
