Firs Grafted On Abies Firma

Abies firma is an excellent tree for southern gardens since it is more tolerant of hot, humid climates than other fir species that are cool climate trees. For that reason, it has also proven useful as a rootstock for the Abies cultivars that would otherwise not do well in the heat and humidity of the South. Fir varieties grafted onto Abies firma rootstocks have a better chance of survival in the South since the rootstocks provides resilience to heat and humidity. Because firs are such a diverse genus with many great ornamental cultivars, the benefits of an Abies firma rootstock opens up more choices of firs for southern gardeners.
