White Spruce is native to northern North America — Alaska, Canada, the Great Lakes region, New York, and Maine. It is narrowly conical, and grows 60’-80’H × 15’-30’W in its native habitat, and typically 40’-60’ × 10’-20’W in a landscape setting. It grows 12”-24” per year, and in 10 years it will reach 12’-20’H × 3’-5’W. the needles are green to blue-green with a waxy coating and silvery-blue underneath. They are three-quarters of an inch long with sharp tips and curl upward from the stems. Light brown seed cones are 2.5” long and pendant on the branches. White Spruce grows in USDA hardiness zones 2 to 8 in a variety of soils. It does best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade.
