Red & Purple Conifers
Red/purple is probably the most unusual coloration for any conifer! Some varieties offer bright red needles in spring like some of the Norway spruces (Picea abies). Similarly, there are several conifers that have red or magenta-colored cones that emerge in spring, creating an outstanding color display. These unusual conifers add a distinctive charm to the garden with ornamental cones or extraordinary foliage coloration. The varieties on this page show a reddish or purple color seasonally with other more predominant colors the rest of the year. On each product page, a full description as well as growth information is provided. Find the perfect red or purple conifer for your garden by using the search filters on the left to meet your needs.
COLOR
Since so few conifers display a red or purple color, the available choices are somewhat limited. However, the contrasting color of these brightly-colored conifers with their more traditionally-colored counterparts combine to make an absolutely stunning landscape. The bright red cones of Ruby Teardrops Colorado Spruce (Picea pungens ‘Ruby Teardrops’) can be paired with a brightly-colored maple for a truly stunning contrast!
ORNAMENTAL CONES
A good number of the varieties listed here such as Pusch Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Pusch’) develop colorful red or purple cones early in the spring. Others show a rusty orange-red with the cold temperatures of winter.
