Palmate or Matsumurae

Most maples fall into this category since this is the most common leaf type. However, those varieties within this group have the widest variation in shapes and sizes with some leaves being less than an inch across and others even exceeding 4″! Depending on species, leaves are somewhere between 5 and 13 lobes. Bloodgood Japanese Maple is one of the most popular red-colored varieties with palmate leaves, and Osakazuki Japanese Maple is one of the most well-known green-colored varieties. Since many of these varieties have fairly wide leaves, they are a popular choice for intermediate-sized shade trees and landscaping medium-sized yards and gardens. Slower-growing varieties with smaller leaves are popular choices for bonsai. Their natural look and small scale makes them ideal for this use.
