Although many Japanese maples have green color during the spring and summer, the fall color of the varieties in this category range from fiery orange-red or brilliant yellow. Osakazuki is one upright-growing, somewhat vase-shaped maple with large green leaves in summer but crimson red color in fall. A favorite, mounding, laceleaf variety is Acer palmatum ‘Emerald Lace’. However, in recent years, dozens of other varieties have become available, many of which are slow-growing or superior in some way. FINDING THE RIGHT GREEN JAPANESE MAPLE

If you are looking for a dwarf maple excellent for bonsai, one of our favorites is Acer palmatum ‘Mikawa yatsubusa’ with its layered leaf arrangement and sculptural branching. For a maple with a weeping habit, consider Acer palmatum ‘Ryu sei’. The leaves are not dissected as many of the low-growing maples are, making it very distinct!
