About  English Laurel

English Laurel is an extremely popular choice for privacy hedges. It grows at a very rapid rate, sometimes 23’ per year in the right conditions, allowing it to become a very large hedge very quickly. It could easily be grown and maintained at 12’ tall and 8’ wide, or smaller if desired. It is a broadleaf evergreen, so it lends a lush texture to the landscape. The foliage is glossy and bright green. In spring, English laurel bears beautiful white flower spikes. Later in summer they develop black, shiny fruits that are attractive to birds (they are toxic to mammals however). English laurel has excellent deer resistance and is very drought tolerant once established. It can grow in full sun to partial shade and grows well in USDA Zones 6-8. It tolerates heat and salt, and is a good choice for coastal climates. To keep English laurel looking tidy, it is best to prune twice per year. Use sharp hand shears if possible to avoid excessive damage to the leaves.
