However, those varieties within this group have the widest variation in shapes and sizes with some leaves being less than an inch across and others even exceeding 4″! Depending on species, leaves are somewhere between 5 and 13 lobes. Bloodgood Japanese Maple is one of the most popular red-colored varieties with palmate leaves, and Osakazuki Japanese Maple is one of the most well-known green-colored varieties. However, in recent years, the number of different Japanese maples has increased substantially! Conifer Kingdom offers an impressive selection of Japanese maples of every color and leaf type. A few of our favorites are Jeddeloh Orange, Emerald Lace, and Red Dragon. Most maples with palmate leaves have a fairly upright form, but shrub-like varieties are also available as well as a few weeping forms like Acer palmatum ‘Ryu sei’. LANDSCAPE USES
Since many of these varieties have fairly wide leaves, they are a popular choice for intermediate-sized shade trees and landscaping medium-sized yards and gardens. Slower-growing varieties with smaller leaves are popular choices for bonsai. Their natural look and small scale makes them ideal for this use. Maples with a palmate leaf have a natural look while also providing a Japanese aesthetic, making them useful for Japanese garden design.
