What a pre-formed hedge is
Years of growing, already done for you.
InstantHedge® grows each hedge to maturity in the field, shapes it, then ships it as pre-spaced, ready-to-plant sections in biodegradable boxes. Each section covers about 40 inches, a little over three feet. Set the boxes end to end in a single trench and you have a thick, even, finished hedge the same afternoon, not a row of small plants to wait on for years.
The classic formal hedge
European Hornbeam
Carpinus betulus · pre-formed InstantHedge®
The hedge of European gardens, allées, and grand estates. Hornbeam clips into crisp, architectural walls, takes sun or deep shade, and is one of the toughest, most forgiving hedges you can grow.
- Dense and formal, with a fine texture that shears into clean geometry.
- Technically deciduous, but it holds coppery leaves through winter for screening almost year-round.
- Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8, and happy in full sun all the way to full shade.
- A workhorse for privacy, garden rooms, and pleached or formal designs.

Good to know
Pre-formed hedges, answered.
How many sections do I need?
Each pre-formed section covers about 40 inches. Take your run in feet, multiply by 12, and divide by 40, or just use the calculator above. If you’d rather not, send us your measurements and we’ll tell you exactly how many to order.
How tall are they, and how fast is the privacy?
Privacy is instant. Pre-formed hedges arrive as full, finished sections, and many privacy varieties install at around six feet tall with no gaps. Exact heights vary by plant and are listed on each product page.
Is European hornbeam evergreen?
Technically it’s deciduous, but hornbeam holds its coppery brown leaves through much of the winter, so a clipped hornbeam hedge keeps screening almost year-round. For a true evergreen, look at boxwood, yew, arborvitae, juniper, or laurel.
Sun or shade?
It depends on the plant, and the range is wide. Hornbeam, yew, and laurels handle shade well, while junipers and arborvitae want full sun. Every product page lists what that hedge prefers.
Do deer leave them alone?
Many of these are deer-resistant, including boxwood, juniper, arborvitae, and the laurels. If you garden under heavy deer pressure, choose one of those and you’ll have far fewer problems.
How do they ship and plant?
As finished, pre-spaced sections in biodegradable, ready-to-plant boxes. Dig one straight trench the length of your run, set the boxes in end to end, backfill, and water. It reads as an established hedge the same day.
How cold-hardy are they?
It varies by plant. Emerald Green arborvitae and many junipers are hardy to Zone 4, hornbeam to Zone 4, and the boxwoods and laurels suit milder zones. Each product page lists its USDA zone so you can match it to your garden.
