What “dwarf” actually means
A “dwarf” is about how slowly it grows – not a guess at the final size.
Conifers are grouped by growth rate, the way the American Conifer Society defines them. Knowing the class tells you exactly what you’re planting, so nothing outgrows its spot by surprise.
Miniature
Thumb-to-fist scale. Made for troughs, fairy gardens, alpine beds, and bonsai.
Dwarf
The everyday garden size. Foundations, borders, containers, and rock gardens.
Intermediate
For a focal point or a low screen with real presence – still slow and manageable.
We list the growth rate and 10-year size on every plant. When we call something a dwarf, you’ll know precisely how slow it is before it goes in the ground.

Good to know
Dwarf conifer questions, answered.
Will it stay small, or turn into a monster?
It stays in its lane. “Dwarf” describes growth rate, not a fixed final size, so a true dwarf adds only 1–6 inches a year and a miniature less than an inch. We list the growth rate and the 10-year size on every plant, so you can match the class to your space and never get a surprise.
Will it survive my winter – or my summer?
Most dwarf conifers are tough across the US. Many spruces, firs, and pines are hardy to Zone 3 or colder, while junipers, arborvitae, and cypress cover the milder zones. Each plant lists its USDA zone – match it to yours. In the hot, humid South, lean toward heat-tolerant types like junipers, cryptomeria, and some cypress, and check the zone note on the page before you buy.
Sun or shade?
Most conifers want full sun for the densest growth and the strongest color – blues and golds especially. A few, like hemlocks and some firs and Hinoki cypress, are happy in part shade. Every product page tells you what that plant prefers.
Do deer leave them alone?
Many do. Spruces, pines, and junipers are generally deer-resistant, which makes them a favorite for rural and suburban gardens. (Arborvitae is the exception – deer do browse it, so site it carefully where deer pressure is high.)
Can you really ship a conifer safely?
Yes – we do it across the country every week. Conifers ship in their pots, hand-packed to travel, and arrive rooted and ready to plant. It’s all backed by our 45-Day Growing Guarantee.
Are they hard to care for?
No. Give a conifer well-drained soil and full sun, water it through the first couple of summers, and it’s close to hands-off after that. They rarely need pruning, and miniatures and dwarfs do beautifully in troughs and containers.
