Picea–Spruce Type

VIEW ALL Picea–Spruce

Some of the hardiest, and easiest-to-grow conifers are spruces. Unfortunately only a few lackluster varieties like the Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca ‘Conica’) are widely cultivated in the nursery trade. So many new and exciting varieties have become available in recent years. With over 100 varieties, finding a unique and beautiful dwarf spruce tree is easy at Conifer Kingdom!

SPRUCE ATTRIBUTES
Most spruces have fairly thin, pointed needles. Some species like the Colorado spruce (Picea pungens) actually have quite sharp needless too which make them resistant to deer browsing! Many cultivars have a compact or weeping growth habit, and a nearly endless assortment of colors are available. Some varieties are selected for their ornamental cone production. One such beautiful variety is Pusch Norway spruce (Picea abies ‘Pusch’). Most spruces like a well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Once they get established, spruce trees are very easy to maintain and keep healthy!

SELECTING THE RIGHT SPRUCE
One of the biggest considerations when selecting a spruce is its rate of growth and plant form. These two factors will determine if it is a good fit for your garden. You can ensure that the species is hardy in your climate by looking at the hardiness zone maps on each listing. The fun part is selecting the color that you prefer!
