Pinus thunbergii is native to Japan and South Korea. It has a general conical shape, opening up to a slight irregular form as it grows and ages. Its dark green needles are up to 4.5” long and grow in clusters at the ends of the bare branches. The white, waxy, terminal “candles” sit upright on the branches and contrast with the green needles. Japanese Black Pine grows at a medium rate (around 12” per year) and attains a 10-year height of 12’-15’. At maturity, it will grow 20’-60’H × 12’-25’W. although cultivars of this tree vary in size and shape. It prefers full sun, but will tolerate light shade, and will grow in average, moist, well-draining soil. It is hardy to USDA zones 5 to 9.
