About Flame Amur Maple

As the name suggests, Flame Amur Maple has truly stunning fall color in hues of gold, orange, and red. It makes an impressive statement when planted as a long hedge. In summer, its attractive green foliage provides excellent privacy. Once the leaves are shed for winter, it allows light to pass through. This is perfect for areas where summer privacy is needed (a swimming pool area for example) but in winter more light is desired. Flame Amur Maple grows quickly—2-3’ per year. It responds well to hard pruning, so you could easily maintain it anywhere from 6-12’ tall over time. One pruning for size control in winter and one for shaping in spring is usually plenty. It grows well in full sun to partial shade and is one of the most cold-hardy choices, growing well in USDA Zones 3-8. It is more drought-tolerant than most other maples. Deer tend to avoid it since in winter when they are the most desperate it only has bare branches. Flame Amur Maple bears interesting winged fruits in clusters in late summer.
