Description

Buxus sempervirens ‘Schmidt’ is a variety of common boxwood that is very cold hardy and is perfectly suited to hedging. It has a fast boxwood growth rate and an upright oval habit. Schmidt Boxwood responds well to repeated shearing, and is unattractive to deer and rabbits. It maintains its green color well in winter, even in colder climates. Item not available to ship to PA or TN.

About Schmidt Boxwood

Schmidt is not one of the more famous boxwood varieties, but we think it should be. It performs extremely well as a hedge. The growth habit is upright and oval, and the growth rate (about 4” per year) makes it easy to maintain while also making it possible to achieve a sizeable hedge in a relatively short amount of time (generally a 10-year-old plant is 5’ tall). It has excellent winter color, even when planted in exposed locations in harsh winter climates.

Schmidt boxwood can be grown in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining soil. It is strongly deer and rabbit resistant. It is hardy to USDA Zone 5 and does well in the Midwest, which can be a challenging area for many boxwoods.
