Colorado Spruce is native to the Rocky Mountains in the higher elevations from Montana and Idaho down to New Mexico. It is narrowly pyramidal with even horizontal branching to the ground and is a favorite for Christmas trees. Its green, blue-green, or silvery-blue, 1.5” needles are sharp, stiff, and crowded on the stems. Two to four inch long brown seed cones hang down on the branches. Colorado Spruce grows slowly to 30’-60’H × 10’-20’W in cultivation, and 10’-20’H × 3’-6’W in 10 years with an annual growth rate of about 12”-24”. It grows best in full sun in moist, rich soils that are well-draining. It will grow in USDA hardiness zones 3 to 8.
