Mugo Pine is native to the mountains of Spain east to the Balkan Peninsula. As a mature tree, it is small and wide, 15’-20’H × 20’-30’W, and only 5’-10’H × 3’-5’W in 10 years. It is dense, with stiff, thick, dark green needles that are 1”-3” long, and 2.5” brown seed cones. A number of cultivars of Mugo pine, however, differ in size and color from the species. It grows in full sun to partial shade in deep, moist, loamy soil that is well-draining. It is hardy to USDA zones 2 to 8.
